Ladies and gentlemen, a new star is born. Hip hop’s latest prodigy was crowned this week as KwaZulu-Natal’s Flex Rabanyan (Mpumelelo Mthembu) was named the winner of The Hustle season two, at Braamfontein’s Shine Studios.
In one of the most talked about events on the local music calendar, the much-anticipated second season of The Hustle reached a climax with Flex Rabanyan named the winner of a tightly fought contest with Johannesburg’s Josh The I Am (Joshua Pieterson).
Flex walked off with R 250 000 cash prize and an Opel Corsa Sport.
O R G A N I C Mag caught up with the main man, born and bred at eSikhawini (it’s actually eSikhaleni, but a topic for another day) to find out what he’s been up to since being crowned.
“I’ve been home for a day now. Buying a vetkoek was the first thing I did when I got back at my hood. I missed this! And I’m really excited about the win. I’d like to thank everyone for their support throughout the season, and there’s really exciting stuff coming in the next few weeks and for the rest of the year,” he said.
The rapper said he is currently in no rush to drop an album but has singles and a few features lined up for music fans.
“I’m not one to reveal plans before hand but yeah, I’ll just be dropping singles for now and I will be working on a few features that I can’t reveal right now. People can also expect a mixtape to drop before the end of this year definitely.”
Flex now joins a young list of artists from eSikhawini making it in the industry that includes Isibaya actress Jessica Nkosi, producer Lunatik, actress Zoe Mthiyane, and co-founder of Joyous Celebration Jabu Hlongwane.
“I’m really happy to be a part of part of artists that are from this part of KZN, I hope I can help put the eSikhawini name on the map,” he said.
VUZU AMP’s Head of Reality, Sphumelele Sibeko reflected on the season.
“We’re in the business of uncovering raw talent and turning them into superstars. The number of original artists and their newfound success attests to what we’ve set out to achieve. Congrats to Flex on a very deserved win, and to Josh for taking it all the way to the end. A big shout out also goes to the amazing sponsors KFC and Opel for making the show possible.”
