Read our first reaction to AKA’s new low-key diss track, Star Signs

Mcebo Mpungose

Straight after announcing he is set to embark on an Australian Tour in March, AKA dropped a hugely anticipated single, ‘Star Signs’, off of his upcoming solo album, Touch My Blood. The rapper dropped the track in the early hours of Tuesday morning and it features one of the most respected lyrical wordsmiths in the game, Stoogie T.

AKA hasn’t dropped a track by himself in a while since he’s been working with Anatii having dropped Be Careful What You Wish For. There’s been a huge cry out for AKA to return to his original rap sound, and it seems like it’s going to continue after this Star Signs.

The rapper, no, the artist, doesn’t rap but sings on what’s become his signature sound now, autotune. The track is shade galore with lyrics that seem pointed to a specific few individuals in the industry, and Stoogie T’s feature only adds more fireworks after THAT speech at the South African Hip Hop Awards last year.

On the track, AKA sings: “How many times I invented a whole new style? Yeah, I remember niggas used to give up on their dreams to go do house. Now I look around everybody got a 22-carat gold tooth smile, I don’t even want the credit, I just wanna be remembered…”

“Niggas sound so American. No pride in their own heritage, the whole vibe so negative, ain’t nobody going remember them…”

The biggest irony about the song so far is how it has featured Stoogie T, who has recently been the biggest critic of rappers that lack lyrical content, yet AKA doesn’t rap or display his lyrical prowess as per his fans outcry recently.

On the track, the rapper says “How ironic so much Gucci but no material on music”. We will leave you to figure who that line is directed to.
